She was a Red Cross-trained nurse: there is a 1955 file 'Grislis, Velta (Nee Sirlaks)' in the International Council of Nurses Nurse Refugee Files at the University of Pennsylvania, and Sirlaks hits in the Latvian Red Cross nurses' journal (Žēlsirdīgā Māsa, 1939–40). Her full name was Velta Skaidrīte.
